Sunglasses are from Pilgrim. The tank top is very old Urban Outfitters and the pants are from Madewell. I'm wearing hi-top Chuck Taylors with ridiculously awesome neon green add on wings I found on sale for $1.99 the other day. Score! Here's how to DIY a pair. The watch and strap are from j. crew. The earrings are vintage and were thrifted way back in high school!

Saturday Horse Shows

Saturday Horse Shows

IMG_9206

IMG_9109

The barn I ride at has casual horse shows  (or schooling shows...) - they are small, involve both English and Western Classes, and seem more like a family riding and goofing off together than something where we have to go all out and all crazy to be the very best. It's not that we don't try...it's just that we don't stress while we're trying!

A few Saturdays ago I had the opportunity to show in one. I showed up alone and was immediately adopted by a mom who's elementary aged son was riding in it, too! (It's hard to show horses on your own...having an "assistant" is completely necessary to get you through the day!) This is just more proof of how calm and laid back these shows are - you can just walk in and you have a crew of people who can jump in and get you where you need to be! My amazing trainer also helped out and ran the show at the same time - she's so talented!

The show went well and I got second place. Thomas Dole of MaxMX Photography was there documenting the whole event and was able to grab a few pictures of me while I was there. Thank you!

Summer Sweetness - Part Two

Summer Sweetness - Part Two

Summer Sweetness Summer Sweetness

Summer is drawing to a close - I finished my internship yesterday and on Monday I start training for the new district. Oh my goodness! This summer has absolutely flown by and has been so jam packed and busy. We hit the ground running by flying to Alaska the day after I finished up with my school year, I started my internship the day after I got back, and I start school three and half days after my internship.

Despite this, there has been so much time to play! When I think of all the amazing things that I have done this summer the thing that comes to mind is gratitude - simple gratitude for all that has been given to me, for all the happiness I have.

What are you grateful for this summer?

Summer Sweetness - Part I

Summer Sweetness - Part I

Summer Sweetness

Summer Sweetness

Summer Sweetness

Things take practice - that's what I've learned this summer. I recently started horseback riding because I really just wanted to be a beginner at something, to remember what it was like to have absolutely zero knowledge of something and yet be expected to do things while muddling your way through them to the goal.

I like tackling new things in community with others, too. I like the process of meeting people and figuring out where they are coming from, what you can teach them and what they have to teach you. Horseback riding is like that - not only do you meet a horse, get to know it, earn it's trust, learn it's commands, and figure out how to partner with it, you learn how to listen to your trainer as she's asking you to do things you've never thought you could do, working through your mistakes, and more importantly, your fears.

Thanks to Jessica blogging has been collaborative this summer, too. It's become a bigger process, and welcoming someone into a happy project I've been working on for a very long time has been a joyful experience. Jessica takes gorgeous pictures and I am so proud of her work and of her dedication to the art of photography, but beyond that she's an excellent teacher, a fantastic brainstormer, and is always willing to answer questions about how to up the ante on my pictures, especially since I feel like I've plateaued in the last year or so with the quality of my own pictures.

Working with someone else inspires me to get out there and work on what I love, to dig out things I haven't worn in a long time, and to try something again, to look at it in a new light. I think everything I'm wearing has been blogged before but never like this.

Honestly, I used to be terrified of collaboration. I was always the girl in school that would take on the entirety of the group project, terrified I would get something less than an A. Over the years, tI've learned to let collaboration be about learning and making mistakes. I've come to grips with letting others teach me. I've slowly opened up by trying to be less shy or more welcoming. In real life I feel that I come off a little standoffish...mostly because I'm somewhat nervous about things because I'm so afraid what I'm doing will fail if I don't make it go just so or people get too close. I've worked hard on that but I still have a long way to go!

This summer I have learned and am learning so much - new writing styles, horsemanship, how too cook, photography basics. Out of curiosity, have you learned or are learning? Who is teaching it to you?

The Hair and Makeup was done by me. I used MAC pigments on my eyes and MAC's Russian Red on my lips. (This is, in my opinion, the best shade of red for redheads!)

Denver Underground Music Showcase

Denver Underground Music Showcase

_MG_0546

JR came home on Saturday night and asked if I had any energy and wanted to go to the Underground Music Showcase, a four day festival of local music here in Denver.

(A Place to Bury Strangers)

UMS was pretty awesome because you purchased a relatively inexpensive wristband ($35 for the entire weekend) and you could go see anything you wanted to see. Everyone was playing in bars and parking lots up and down a street here, about twelve blocks worth, and bands changed on the hour at each place which was both a blessing and a curse. The short sets allowed you to see a ton of bands in an evening but at the same time the sets were really short - I felt bad for some of the people from further away that had traveled a while only to play for about 45 or 50 minutes and some of it felt incomplete because they couldn't get through a proper set.

We were able to spend all evening on Saturday and Sunday and we got to see a pretty stellar set of music. A few we just wandered into and a few we planned to go to. JR, who is a lot more in touch with local Denver music than I am, curated our band selection on both days but we did meander into a few shows

Southern Comforts

Southern Comforts

_MG_9640

I was in Tennessee last week, in the swelter and humidity of the South. We honeymooned in the Smokey Mountains three years ago and it was good to return.

We drove the backroads through the mountains, out of the park, stumbling upon old houses dissolving into the greenery. We found farm stands, stocked with beautiful homegrown produce. We found rivers with lazy white blossoms floating downstream. We found Appalachian folk music and trails winding through the mountains to waterfalls

We found that blessed kind of slowness and easy living that the south forces upon you whenever you go to visit..

WORS: Battle of Cam Rock

WORS: Battle of Cam Rock

I visited my family in Wisconsin this past week and managed to go race while I was there.

WORS - Battle of Cam Rock

Battle of Cam Rock was an interesting race - very twisty, lots of turns, not too technical. I forgot to count how many passed me at the start of the race which was a hill, a little flat, and another hill. I forgot to count how many people I passed as I continued cranking and women were starting to slow down from exerting too much effort going up the hill so I was essentially riding without a number. Later in the race I passed a guy and he said I was in fifth and I thought he was just being silly because I  felt like was going insanely slow.

WORS - Battle of Cam Rock

Turns out his counting was pretty much correct - after I talked to him another woman passed me and I ended up 6th overall and 1st in my age group.

How's that for a fun podium shot?

Three Days of Summer

Three Days of Summer

One of the gifts of summer is that we seem to have more time. People move slower. Things seem less imperative. Housekeeping and cleaning is only done in the cool hours of the morning and evening and the middle of the day is given to rest. We measure our time less - it stays light so late that I often forget if it's 6:00pm or 8:00pm

_MG_0281

We've had time to look at book stalls with friends...

_MG_0289

...time to enjoy teeny tiny little kittens...

_MG_0292

...time to chase friends into dream blue houses in old neighborhoods...

_MG_0300

...time to sit on creaky old porches in the shade...

_MG_0303

...time to spend in magical overgrown gardens...

... and time to cultivate my home.

What have you been doing with your summer time?
